Marxism believes that economic conflict produces class (rich, middle, and poor) and produces class conflict.

A key part of control of a group is alienation in all aspects of society (family, education system, media) this provides the organizers with workers who don’t mind working for the external rewards (safety for example) and a constant wage.

Deviance or any behavior that differs from the group (which is the normal) is not accepted and is instead considered disrespectful and/or dangerous.

Once they were over 2,000 members, in the late 1960s the organization operated in several major American cities.

The black panther party’s main grievances towards their government at the time was the release of all blacks from jail and the payment of compensation to African Americans for cemeteries of exploitation.

The main demands that empowered the movement includes:

The end of racism in hiring

More minority employees in local businesses especially in the bay area

Equal rights, and equal job opportunities

During this time there was an increase in African Americans from the second Great Migration.

  • The Second great migration is the migration of 5 million african americans  coming from the South, Northeast,  midwest and the west from 1940-1970

UC berkleys CORE (Congress on racial equality) students and with other black organizations in San Fran and Okland to form the Ad Hoc Committee

Their plan was to pressure local bay area companies to hire more minority employees and picket business until they agree to end their discriminatory practices.

Their protests were well coordinated non violent that aimed to create confrontation with local companies. They even offered negotiations with companies, we will end protests if you hire minorities.

  • What was the outcome of the protests?

In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was enacted, its a law that prohibits employers to not employ her on the basis of race, color, religion, sex and orgin.

In 1967 in the article im sharing, it states 28% of Berkeley's black population was hired.

At the time the United States is allied with South Vietnam against North Vietnam in an effort to stop the spread of communism.

In 1964 North Vietnam bombed US boats, the current president attacked back.

During this time the US people at the time started to question their assertion with fighting a democratic war, to liberate South Vietnamese People from Communism threats.

At the time there had been, 500 thousand troops fighting, 15,058 were killed and 109,527 wounded.

The war was costing 25 billion, which is tax money.

40 thousand men were called into service each month.

This then sparked the 1967 Anti-War Protests against the Vietnam War.

A side fact: Martin Luther King went public with his opposition to the war on moral grounds.

He condemned the use of federal funds being taken from domestic funds (businesses, education, healthcare etc). He also commented on the disproportionate number of African American casualties in relation to the total amount of soldiers killed in the war.
